Due to its high altitude of 1,100 m to 2,400 m, the Grosseck-Speiereck ski area in Mauterndorf is considered to be guaranteed snow. The best conditions await you from the end of November until after Easter. In the worst case scenario, however, the entire mountain can be completely covered in snow thanks to the most up-to-date snow-making equipment.

From the Mauterndorf ski centre, which can also be reached without snow chains, it’s up and away on a modern 8-person gondola cable car into the extensive ski area. Change once into a chairlift and then you quickly reach the highest point of the Grosseck-Speiereck adventure mountain, the Speiereck at 2,400 m.

By the way, this is also the highest point in Salzburg you can reach with a lift (excluding the glacier ski areas). As well as the breath-taking panorama of the deep snow-covered mountain landscape of the Lungau, a wonderfully wide, sunny ski slope awaits you, which takes you down to St. Michael in the Lungau – a downhill slope with an altitude difference of 1,400 m and 9 km in length!

Three ski lodges and four restaurants invite you to enjoy their sunny terraces and take some refreshment on the mountain. In addition to regional dishes and Salzburg specialities, dishes are also on the menu that should not be missed on a skiing holiday: such as Germknödel (sweet dumplings) or Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancake with fruits)!

Starting point for exciting days spent skiing in the Lungau holiday region

Located directly on the B99, the Katschberg main road, heading towards Obertauern, you will find a large car park, which makes it possible to access the Grosseck-Speiereck ski area directly and conveniently. There you have a choice between an 8-person cable car, five chairlifts, four practice lifts, two rope lifts and two children’s conveyor bands.

At the valley station of the 8-person gondola cable car, next to the Lungau mountain lifts ticket office, there is a shop and a curling sheet, as well as the SMARTY Sports Mauterndorf ski school with ski nursery and Rest sports shop with ski hire and a ski and boot depot. A cash machine is also available as a local service for you. The range of facilities is complemented by the Schialm restaurant, where you can fortify yourself on the spacious sun terrace during your ski trip. Of course, the lively après-ski should also not be forgotten. The Fliegenpilz après-ski outdoor bar in the Mauterndorf ski centre is the perfect meeting place for this after an eventful day skiing in the Lungau in Salzburg.

Directly in the ski centre, two practice lifts and a children’s ”magic carpet“ travelator are available for all those who are learning to ski or want to improve their style. It is also perfect skiing for beginners, as the practice area lies in the valley.

The Mauterndorf ski centre is also easy to reach with public ski buses. The local town bus passes the B&Bs, guesthouses, private room renters and hotels in Mauterndorf at regular, short intervals; the regional ski bus in the Lungau Takt serves the surrounding villages, such as Mariapfarr, St. Michael and Obertauern. This means you can quite simply leave your car parked up and enjoy a car-free winter holiday in Mauterndorf.

Off-piste adventures on a winter holiday in Mauterndorf

There’s even a 12 km cross-country circuit towards Tweng at a level ranging from more difficult to most difficult. Cross-country skiers will find a scenically attractive trail, which takes them over rugged terrain along the Taurach river to Annakapelle and along past the Tweng floodplain to Lantschfeld at the foot of the Radstädter Tauern.

For all those who want to make a winter hike through deep snow-covered Salzburg winter countryside, they can walk along a traffic-free, groomed and illuminated winter hiking trail from the ski centre to the historic town centre of Mauterndorf. You should expect to take about 25 minutes to walk the approximate distance of 1.5 km. Along the way you will pass Mauterndorf Castle, which is also open in winter and well worth a visit!
