The Schlossmaierhaus with castle in Mauterndorf

Mauterndorf castle

The town landmark reigns majestically on a rock and offers a very special type of castle experience. Constructed as a toll castle and at times used as the summer residence of the Salzburg archbishops, Mauterndorf Castle is today a living museum, interesting for everyone, whether families, seniors or groups.

Lungau country museum

This exhibition in Mauterndorf Castle shows you the uniqueness and the diversity of the Lungau traditions in the annual cycle. Even the agricultural way of life from times gone by is displayed. Here, too, you can enjoy free admission with the SalzburgerLand Card and Die Abenteuerlichen Drei (The Adventurous Three) combined ticket and the Lungau Card

Diese Ausstellung in der Burg Mauterndorf zeigt Ihnen die Einzigartigkeit und die Vielfalt des Lungauer Brauchtums im Jahreskreis. Regelmäßige Sonderausstellungen und die fundierte Dauerausstellung informieren umfassend über den Lungau in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart.

Step gable houses in the village of Mauterndorf

In the 16th century, the Lungau mining industry enjoyed a boom and so important trades people relocated to Mauterndorf. The yoke-makers from Bavaria were the most powerful of these and influenced the architectural style long-term, the most striking detail is the stepped gables on the buildings in the Bavarian-Franconian style.

Parish church of St. Bartholomew

This impressive church stands in the centre of the historic town and in addition to Romanesque features, the architecture also reflects early gothic and baroque elements. A special attraction is the high altar painting "The Matyrdom of Saint Bartholomew" from the year 1668 by J.Fr. Pireth.

Chapel of St. Gertrauden

The oldest church in Mauterndorf can be found in the St. Gertrauden neighbourhood. The church was built in the Romanesque style and also has the "cemetery of the innocent (non-baptised) children.

Church of St. Wolfgang

This small church dating from 1642 is llocated on an elevation a few minutes from the town centre. The Mount Calvary depiction, as well as the crucifixion group on the southern side of the facade, is worth visiting. Special mention should be made of the view from the Church of St. Wolfgang of the Lungau basin and the surrounding mountains.

The Taurachbahn is the highest altitude narrow gauge railway in Austria and a family summer experience in the Lungau from Mauterndorf to St. Andrä.

The Sagenhof in Steindorf

Did you know, ...

...In Steindorf, few kilometres from the town centre, is the legendary organic farm, Staudingerhof. A private museum has been set up in the former granary, which includes Roman finds, amongst others.
